The World of White
On a December morning in Summit County, I set out for a hike above the town of Silverthorne, just after a snowstorm. Several inches of fresh powder blanketed the landscape, transforming the hills and valleys into a world of white. I hiked through a forest that was so silent and still, muffled by the new snow, broken only by the soft crunch of my footsteps. After about an hour of hiking, I emerged into a clearing which boasted a view across the valley toward Red Peak in the Gore Range. The mountain, named after its warm-colored granite in the summer, was entirely coated in snow. Dappled morning light filtered through the clouds, illuminating the ridgelines and subalpine forests below the peak. Snow-covered sagebrush in the foreground added texture and depth to the scene, while up above, pockets of Colorado’s cobalt-blue sky appeared through the lingering cloud cover, a perfect contrast to the more monotone colors below.
