Longs Peak on Fire
On a late August evening in Rocky Mountain National Park, I arrived very late to the overlook I had planned to shoot sunset from. I typically like to get to my desired location 1-2 hours before sunset, to have time to scout for compositions and photograph the golden hour, but after a long drive from Denver and lots of unanticipated traffic, I arrived just as the sun was setting below the horizon. After leaving my vehicle behind, I quickly sprinted up the trail, and reached a high overlook as the final light of day began to fall. Across the valley, Longs Peak stood tall and unwavering, its rugged face bathed in orange light. Behind it, mammatus storm clouds caught fire with the colors of the setting sun. The shadows of the high peaks reached long across the ridgelines, adding depth and drama to the scene. For a brief moment, the sky, the mountains, and the light came together in breathtaking perfection.
